US POLO ASSOCIATION

One of my favorite projects to date, the USPA Annual Report design. As a part of our Publication Design course at Stout we redid an existing annual report of a considerable length. I chose the USPA due to my interest in equestrian sports. I enjoyed laying out the images in correlation with the text in engaging and surprising ways. Drawing from retro polo uniforms and my knowledge of color theory I chose to stick with bold primary colors, blocking them out and strategically using them with the larger number or text callouts.

THE PROCESS

While the choice to use primary colors was a simple one, I did find there was a challenge to pair the rich color next to imagery and with other text. Such as the red block with black text. My professor, peers and I went back and forth on wether red and black or red and white was easier to read... it could really go either way.

While some dislike justified text, I really enjoy how clean the columns look when used. A fitting look and feel for a wealthy sport's report. To elevate the piece further, I increased the page size to 9"x12" to give it a more substantial presence. These adjustments paid off in the printed version where you could really feel the weight and see the size. As a part of the course, we printed and bound our own books, a part of the physical process that I found a lot satisfaction from.
